L-ORIC: GENERAL ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Oversee and supervise all research activities within the Institution.
  2. Formulate research policies and establish priorities for the Institution.
  3. Engage in fundraising efforts to support research activities.
  4. Mobilize faculty, business communities, and industries to promote the commercialization of research.
  5. Champion entrepreneurship, technology transfer, and commercialization initiatives.
  6. Encourage and facilitate multi-disciplinary research initiatives.
  7. Assist in organizing national and international research conferences.
  8. Coordinate research-related seminars and training workshops for faculty.
  9. Support faculty participation in national and international research conferences, seminars, and training workshops.
  10. Support faculty in the publication of their research work.
  11. Establish national and international networks for research activities.
  12. Evaluate submitted research proposals in collaboration with the Institutional Review Board (ERB) and Ethical Committee (EC) to ensure feasibility, validity, and scientific quality.
  13. Seek opinions from field specialists when necessary, emphasizing the scientific quality of the methodology of the research proposals.
  14. Maintain and update the ORIC webpage, ensuring visibility of Institutional research-related information, projects and publications.

LMDC L-ORIC DOMAINS

LMDC INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD (IRB)
AND ETHICS COMMITTEE (EC)

Objectives

  1. To regularly conduct technical and ethical reviews of all research proposals which are developed by faculty or postgraduate and undergraduate students of medical and dental of LMDC, Lahore, or its attached hospitals.
  2. To conduct technical and ethical reviews of all external research proposals of data collection in LMDC or its attached hospitals.
  3. To make recommendations on the scientific soundness of the proposed research.
  4. To issue a certificate of approval for research proposals that fulfill the set criteria.
  5. To work in close collaboration with the Research Cell and Office of Innovation and Commercialization to develop, modify, and approve the technical guidelines for researchers and organize training on research methodology, biostatistics, and reference management systems.
  6. To maintain a complete record of research proposals submitted to LMDC IRB/EC, minutes of the meetings, and the issued certificates of approval of research.

LMDC RESEARCH CELL
Office of Faculty Research

Objectives

  1. To formulate guidelines on all research-related activities that have an impact on the strategic objectives of LMDC.
  2. To foster and support a robust culture of scholarship and a supportive research environment within the LMDC for faculty and students.
  3. To act as an advisory committee to develop and oversee Institutional research and research training.
  4. To design a research proposal format for undergraduate and post graduate students and faculty members.
  5. To liaise with IRB and EC to review submitted research proposals to ensure feasibility, validity, and scientific quality.
  6. To liaise with the Office of Innovation and Commercialization in exploring possibilities of grant funding for Institutional research internally and from external sources.
  7. To maintain a record of all research projects and activities taking place in the LMDC, and register them with ORIC.
  8. To offer support to the Office of Innovation and Commercialization, when and as needed.
  9. To assist the Office of Innovation and Commercialization in maintaining the ORIC webpage, with special attention to updating research-related information such as research projects and publication lists.
  10. The Research Committee will arrange trainings in alliance with IRB and EC, Office of Innovation and Commercialization and Department of Medical Education (DME) on:
        • Research methodologies
        • Critical appraisals of published research articles
        • Writing and publishing scientific papers
        • iii. Referencing Styles
        • Data Management in packages like SPSS
        • Reference Management using packages like Mendeley etc.

Student Research Society

Objectives of the Research Society

  1. To offer training opportunities and resources to support the professional development of their audience. These initiatives can include workshops, webinars, and online courses.
  2. To promote research excellence by recognizing and celebrating outstanding contributions to the field.
  3. To disseminate standard research guidelines and inculcate awareness about how to proceed for IRB. Research society also contributes to the dissemination of new and relevant information within their field.
  4. To facilitate the students for guidance from the mentors.
  5. To assist in manuscript publication process.
  6. To ensure the resource allocation and coordination to optimize productivity of each student society.
  7. To organize public lectures, outreach programs, and educational initiatives to raise awareness and foster understanding of complex scientific and academic concepts.
  8. International Collaboration
  9. To liaise with the Office of Innovation and Commercialization in exploring possibilities of grant funding for Institutional research internally and from external sources.
  10. The society will work in close liaison with LMDC research and medical education committees to arrange and organize activities like
        • Research workshops
        • Research classes and Journal clubs
        • Research competition
        • Research seminar
        • Newsletter
        • A maximum of two activities annually will be arranged
        • The performance of the society will be assessed and reviewed annually by administrative authorities.

LMDC INNOVATION & COMMERCIALIZATION COMMITTEE

Objectives of the Research Society

Role of Innovation Domain: 

Innovation includes two sub-domains i.e. Academic domain and Patent/Industrial domain.

Academic domain:

It initiates and facilitates frequent workshops, symposiums, courses, and conferences aimed at enhancing research and educational methodologies while fostering inspiration for innovation.

Patents/ Industrial domain:

    • This area will streamline the process of patent filing both domestically and internationally.
    • The innovation sectors of ORIC will construct an Institutional Intellectual Portfolio (IIP) that showcases the contributions of the institution, faculty, and students in the respective field.
    • The innovation sector enhances awareness of the Intellectual Portfolio by organizing informative sessions for students, faculty, and staff.
    • The innovation sector collaborates with the Technology and Innovation Support Centre of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan to elevate institutional research and development to a global scale.

Role of Commercialization Domain:

    • Keeping ORIC data/information on funding/donor agencies up to date.
    • Establishing connections with donors providing research funding.
    • Developing ties with industries for collaborative initiatives.
    • Organizing and conducting seminars focusing on faculty-industry interaction.
    • Formulating business plans for ORIC.
    • Creating Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the advancements in the Commercialization domain of ORIC.
    • Coordinating with the Research and Innovation sectors of ORIC

INTEGRATING AND FACILITATING RESEARCH
AND INNOVATION ACTIVITIES

By implementing the following key components, LMDC, Lahore can create a conducive environment for research and innovation, ultimately contributing to the advancement of knowledge and the improvement of healthcare practices.

  1. Research Coordination Office:

    • Establish a centralized Research Coordination Office responsible for overseeing and coordinating all research and innovation activities.
    • This office can serve as a hub for communication, collaboration, and information dissemination among faculty members, researchers, and staff.
  2. Facilitating Basic, Clinical, and Field Research:

    • Provide support for researchers engaged in basic, clinical, and field research by offering resources such as state-of-the-art laboratories, equipment, and research facilities.
    • Establish research clusters or groups based on common research interests to foster collaboration and interdisciplinary research.
  3. Scientific Evaluation and Ethical Considerations:

    • Implement a rigorous scientific evaluation process for research proposals to ensure high-quality research output.
    • Establish an Ethics Review Board to evaluate and approve research projects, ensuring compliance with ethical standards and regulations.
  4. Training Programs:

    • Conduct regular training programs and workshops to enhance the research skills of faculty members and staff.
    • Provide training in research methodologies, data analysis, academic writing, and research ethics.
  5. Financial Assistance:

    • Develop a transparent and accessible system for financial assistance applications for research projects.
    • Encourage external funding through grants and collaborations with funding agencies.
  6. Corporate Sector Collaboration:

    • Actively engage the corporate sector through partnerships, collaborations, and sponsorships.
    • Encourage the corporate sector to provide financial and technical assistance for research and innovation projects.
  7. Innovation Support:

    • Foster an environment that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship among faculty members and students.
    • Establish mechanisms for the protection of intellectual property and support for technology transfer and commercialization.
  8. Publications and Dissemination:

    • Support the dissemination of research findings through publications in reputable journals and presentations at conferences.
    • Create platforms for showcasing innovations and research achievements within the academic community and beyond.
  9. Monitoring and Evaluation:

    • Implement a system for monitoring and evaluating the progress and impact of research and innovation activities.
    • Use feedback mechanisms to continuously improve the support system and address any challenges that may arise.

L-ORIC DIRECTOR

RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Oversee all operational and administrative aspects of ORIC in coordination with the Chairperson and Co-Chairperson.
    • Coordinate and organize all activities conducted by ORIC.
    • Coordinate meetings of the ORIC Council and its sub-committees in collaboration with the Chairperson.
    • Provide support to the Chairperson during ORIC Council meetings.
    • Manage financial matters related to ORIC in coordination with the Chairperson and Co-Chairperson.
    • Follow up on all matters arising from ORIC Council Meetings.
    • Undertake other duties as assigned by the Chairperson ORIC.

CHAIRPERSONS OF LMDC IRB & EC, RESEARCH & INNOVATION & COMMERCIALIZATION COMMITTEES

RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Oversee the administration of their committees.
    • Supervise all committee activities and convene meetings in coordination with the L-ORIC Director.
    • Manage financial matters in collaboration with the ORIC Director.
    • Collaborate with the Director to plan meeting agenda, deciding on items brought by other members, their order and timing, and who will introduce each item. Identify the agenda items for information, discussion, or decision. Be well-informed about each item and actions taken since the last meeting. Verify accurate recording of decisions and assign responsibility for implementing them.
    • Oversee the timely writing, checking, and signing of minutes of the meeting, within a week.
