The departments at LMDC, LPC, LCPT, & RPCN give our students a comprehensive educational experience to prepare them for rewarding professional careers. Brief overviews are given below.

Clinical Sciences


The Department of Anaesthesiology at Lahore Medical & Dental College was established in year 2002.

Nine operating theatres are working simultaneously; these are equipped with the latest state of art monitors for SPO2, NIBP, Capnograph, ECG, Temperature and Invasive Venous and arterial monitoring. Five Anaesthesia Machines are Dragger (North America) with complete modern anaesthesia delivery system. There are four locally made machines in addition to these machines.

The staff offers around the clock coverage by the Anaesthesia team including Senior Registrars who are physically present in hospital to all surgical departments. Two Medical Officers along with a Senior Registrar cover is present in hospital for the evening duty from 02:00 pm to 08:00 pm. One Senior Registrar and three medical officers stay in hospital from 08:00 pm to 08:00 am for emergency cover. There is also a round the clock cover for five bedded surgical ICU.

There is a seventeen bedded ICU equipped with patient monitors and three ventilators which are ready for use as soon as the need arises.

Scope of Department:

The department of dermatology is mainly comprised of medical, basic surgical and venerology facilities  . The Department is primarily an outpatient specialty, and patient  with an unknown skin disease or review of more complex and chronic cases are referred to the department. Inpatient facility is dedicated for seriously ill patients. The department is furnished with the all necessary equipment to carry out various latest treatment modalities and procedures.

For Students:

The Department of Dermatology is a renowned department in town for teaching and research in dermatology. The teaching department, outpatients, research and inpatient and outpatient treatment facilities are available in the department of Dermatology.

The department serves as the main dermatology referral centre for local area’s large population. It has a team of three dermatologists and eight post graduate trainees who manage busy outpatient and inpatient clinics and various procedures. There is special emphasis on the training of students according to international standards.

ENT / Head & Neck Surgery

Scope of Department:

More than 50% of all physician office visits are for ENT problems. We have ear, nose and throat specialists (ENT) who are trained in the medical and surgical treatment of the ears, nose throat, and related structures of the head and neck. They have special expertise in managing diseases of the ears, nose and nasal passage sinuses, larynx (voice box), oral cavity and upper pharynx (mouth and throat), as well as structures of the neck and face.

Objectives of Department:

ENT/Head and Neck Surgery department provides students with complete education in the comprehensive medical and surgical care of patients with diseases and disorders that affect the ears, nose throat, head, and neck. The educational program combines core basic science knowledge of otolaryngology and the communication sciences with the clinical aspects of diagnosis and medical and/or surgical therapy for related ailments.

For Students:

The Department of ENT, Head and Neck Surgery offer comprehensive evaluation and treatment for patients with ear, nose and throat disorders.
Medical students are expected to perform clinical skills, to take part in, and to assist with the activities performed by the consultants or residents as well as to observe.

Fourth year medical students are expected to demonstrate their ability to take a history, perform an ENT examination, and make an assessment and plan on patients in the clinic with supervision by a consultant.

Fourth year medical students are expected to perform tracheostomy on dummies as well as on patients when the opportunity affords. All students are to learn clinical skills relevant to ENT i,e Syringing ear, Otoscopy,anterior and posterior Nasal packing interpreting audiograms,Valsava test,Politzer test and Examination of cranial V,VII & IX.

Our ENT Department provides state of the art facilities regarding patient management while highly specialized procedures such as FESS, Septorhinoplasty, micro-laryngeal surgery, micro-ear surgery, oesophagoscopy, bronchoscopy and head & neck tumour surgery are being performed on site on a regular basis.

The principal objective of the department of medicine is to educate students about the expert diagnosis and compassionate management of human illness, building on the biochemical, physiological and behavioral foundation of clinical experience. Students are taught information acquisition through history taking, physical examination, and laboratory evaluation.

Information synthesis through achieving differential diagnosis and evaluation plan and medical decision making for continued evaluation and therapy. Students are encouraged and guided in the development of caring physician and patient relationship. The junior and senior years of medical school constitute a continuum of clinical experience.

The curriculum is arranged to provide maximum flexibility. The department offers an extremely broad range of advance clinical clerkship in general medicine and sub specialties. Students become integrated into a ward team, apply and extend their clinical skills, medical knowledge and judgment in the care of patients assigned to them under the immediate supervision of House Officer and Medical Officers. In addition to the regular sessions, seminars, morning meetings and case presentations enhance the student’s participation.

Obstetrics & Gynecology

The educational program in Obstetrics and Gynecology is designed to teach students female physiology in infancy, childhood and adolescence, reproductive endocrinology during menstruating years, management of pregnancy and delivery and understanding of changes in post menopausal years.

The program includes, the management of normal and abnormal obstetrical conditions, the anatomical and physiological variants following childbirth and gynecological abnormalities not necessarily related to reproduction. The emotional aspects of genital development and prenatal and intra natal abnormalities and oncological aspects of reproductive tract. Work in the wards and outpatient clinic is designed for providing practical experience in the methods and techniques of examination and diagnosis. Students are assigned specific patients and take part in their prenatal care and management.

Detailed clinical discussions of current clinical problems are held regularly with faculty, this experience constitutes the clerkship in Obs. &Gynae. Students participate in general prenatal care, conduct of labor and delivery and after care of patients. They are responsible for the preliminary history and examination of selected gynecological patients, assist in gynecological surgeries and participate in post operative care. They learn to carry out investigations and to perform minor surgeries.

Department of Ophthalmology provides instructions to medical students through lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and the opportunity to observe patients and review cases. Emphasis is on history taking and techniques of examination of eye. The Department of Ophthalmology has been established with facilities of surgery.

It is a land mark of continued progress in upgrading the clinical education. The Department is equipped with sophisticated technology and equipment which would no doubt expand the horizons of learning in medical education.

A full-fledged Orthopedics Department is functioning in Ghurki Trust Teaching Hospital, Lahore in association with Lahore Medical and Dental College.

The department is headed by a well reputed qualified Orthopedic Surgeon. Two wards of 40 beds each have been earmarked for this department. The department is very well attended by patients in OPD and in wards. The operation theater is equipped with state of the art equipments. All types of operations are performed particularly of Spinal Surgery. Deserving patients are given Orthopedic implants free of cost.

The Paediatric Department is providing emergency services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All the neonates delivered in the hospital are examined by the Paediatric Department staff and those who need special care are shifted to the nursery. There is a strong liaison between the Paediatric Department and the Department of Obstetrics which has improved the perinatal mortality and morbidity significantly.

Between 300-320 patients are examined in the outpatient department every week. The Paediatric ward consists of 35 beds having (on average) 250 admissions per month. The admitted patients are cared for by experienced and qualified doctors along with trained nurses.

Teaching & Training

The Department of Paediatrics strives for excellence in the education of Paediatrics with focus on providing students and residents with a comprehensive and diverse experience. Medical students rotate through the Department of Paediatrics to gain firsthand experience in a hospital setting. Our faculty members deliver lectures to students as part of the medical school curriculum and are available to mentor any level of trainee.

Community Education / Advocacy

Paediatric residents and faculty participate in many community education programs, such as infant & child nutrition, lactation management, importance of timely vaccinations, campaign against polio and control of other infectious diseases.

Physiotherapy (DPT)

Physical therapist practice is concerned with identifying and maximizing quality of life and functional movement potential, within the spheres of promotion, prevention, maintenance, intervention/treatment,
habilitation and rehabilitation. This encompasses physical, psychological, emotional, and social well being. Physical therapist practice involves the interaction between physical therapist, patients or clients, families, care givers, other health care providers, and communities, in a process of assessing movement potential and in establishing agreed upon goals and objectives using knowledge and skills unique to physical therapists.


Entry level DPT Program will prepare and equip physical therapists to practice in a variety of settings able to deliver services in both urban and rural communities, acknowledging their roles as facilitators and educators of other health personnel necessary for the attainment of physical therapy and tient/client goal.

Entry level DPT Program will equip students with the necessary communication and decision-making skills to work in collaboration with their patients/clients, careers, other professionals, and colleagues.

Entry level DPT Program will promote appropriate multi professional and inter professional learning experiences and practice.

Entry level DPT Program will educate physical therapists who are knowledgeable, self-assured, adaptable, reflective, humanistic, and service-oriented and who, by virtue of critical thinking, life-long learning,and ethical values, render independent judgments concerning patient/client needs.
Entry level DPT Program will educate physical therapists who demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the basic and clinical sciences relevant to physical therapy, both in their fundamental context and in their application to the discipline of physical therapy.

Entry level DPT Program will educate physical therapists who demonstrate mastery of entry level professional clinical skills. Provision of these services is based on the best available evidence and includes physical therapy examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, prevention

Present day medical education stresses on the understanding of normal personality development and dynamic processes which underlie psychopathology as well as art of dealing with these and the application of this knowledge to patient care.

Special attention is paid to understanding the common psychological problems seen in clinical practice and special attention is given to community psychiatry when medical students participate in clinical experience with psychiatric patients. They learn to take case history and conduct mental status examination. Differential diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

A full-fledged department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences has been established. The department is headed by a qualified Psychiatrist. Regular lectures have been delivered and practicals are conducted.

The faculty of surgery is responsible for the teaching and training of medical students, keeping in view the needs of our society, in a structured program. Clinical teaching is provided at Ghurki Trust Teaching Hospital, Lahore to third, fourth and final year medical students. They are taught basic principles in surgery i.e. infections and inflammation, asepsis, tumors, immunity and transplantation, fluid and electrolyte balance, specific infections like tuberculosis, anastomotic techniques and principles.

Specialized surgery topics included are hernia, intestinal obstruction, peptic ulcer, gall stones, gastrointestinal malignancy, skin tumors, thyroid diseases, breast pathologies, rectal problems, urinary tract infections and tumors, renal calculi diseases, etc. they are also taught topics in Neurosurgery, Paediatrics surgery, plastic surgery, Orthopedic surgery, vascular surgery and Cardiod-thoracic surgery. These topics are discussed in tutorials, discouraging a didactic form of teaching. All the students in a group are expected to participate in the ensuing discussion.

The students are exposed in a wide variety of surgical problems, where they are expected to clerk patients and elicit clinical signs, under the supervision of a tutor. They are encouraged to order relevant investigations, reach a plausible diagnosis and institute management, on scientific basis. Thus making them independent thinkers and ensuring their safe graduation as medical practitioners. The process of evaluation is continuous. Examinations are carried out regularly and their results are given due weight-age, and therefore included in the final examination results.

The department of Urology was established in the year 2000 in Lahore Medical & Dental College.

The Department of Urology provides following facilities Indoor:

Urology Department shares a ward with Surgical Unit having separate bays for patients of Urology in both male and female surgical wards.

A separate 40 bedded ward for male patients and a 40 bedded ward for female patients along with all other ancillary facilities is planned to be constructed in immediate future. The location plan of which has already been approved. Urology Department also shares Surgical ICU with department of surgery.

An independent Urology OPD is located in the main outpatient building of the hospital.

Clinical Meetings

•          The Department of Urology regularly participates in monthly clinical meetings of Pakistan Association of Urology Surgeons, Lahore Chapter, held in various teaching hospitals of Lahore, and has hosted two PAUS meetings till date.

•          The Department also participates in National & International Conferences of Urology held in Lahore and a research paper on the topic of

“Varicocoele” was presented in the Annual Urology conference held in March 2004 at Pearl-Continental Hotel, Lahore.

•      Urology Department actively participates in weekly interdepartmental Clinico-pathological Conferences held at GTTH, Lahore.

It is a charitable NGO affiliated with department of Urology LMDC, Lahore.

Basic Sciences


Scope of department:

To teach Anatomy to undergraduate students and later to facilitate post graduate studies

Additional information-

CME activities are held every month in which journal articles are discussed for educating and promoting research activities iin the department.

Anatomy is the oldest medical discipline, which encompasses the study of biological structure at various levels. The curriculum of Anatomy covers all aspects of cell biology, Gross and Microscopic Anatomy, Embryology and Neuro-anatomy.

The study of cell biology includes light and electron microscopic structures and function of cells with special reference to membranes, organelles, inclusions, metabolism, transport, division, growth, aging and cell specialization. Gross Anatomy covers the study of structure and functions of human organ systems and their relation to each other. Practical experience would be gained by dissection of human body and study with the help of models, specimens, charts and histological slides would help the students to develop clear concepts of Anatomy.

The study of Embryology covers the principles of reproduction, fetal growth and development with explanation of various structural relationships in the human body and etiology of developmental anomalies. The study of Neuro-anatomy covers the basic principles of organization and functions of nervous system.

The biochemistry course aims to give our students an understanding of the basic principles of structure and function of various chemical elements that constitute living cells.

The course is structured into three distinct portions in order to provide a logical approach to the subject: i). the nature of Bio-molecules ii). the study of synthesis, breakdown and biological function of essential bio-molecules iii). the understanding of chemical and molecular processes which form the basis of health and disease.

Our students receive hands on training by performing practicals in the laboratory – further expanding the concepts discussed in lectures and seminars. into real world scenarios.  The student will be introduced to the methods of biochemical analysis by various techniques used for separation, identification and measurement of bio-molecules relevant to clinical sciences. Students are also be introduced to the concept of chemical pathology, when measurement of bio-molecules are used for diagnosis and monitoring of disease states.

Community Medicine

Scope: Community Medicine is the branch of medicine concerned with the health of populations. It strives to protect and promote the health and well-being of the community through Primary Health Care approach. The mission of Community Medicine teaching is to contribute to the development of a well-rounded (holistic) medical professional, who will demonstrate knowledge and competence with compassion in dealing with primary health care, desire for lifelong learning, evidence-based practice, interdisciplinary team work, and professional and ethical behaviour in practice in order to improve and sustain the health of the population.

The department of Community Medicine at LMDC, was established in 2001 with a view to impart community based knowledge and skills to the undergraduate students of MBBS, Physiotherapy and Allied Sciences.  In Lahore, it is the first Community Medicine Department in the private sector to be accredited by CPSP for MCPS and FCPS part II training. The Department has excelled in not only providing the basic knowledge of Community Medicine but also has pioneered community based research in various fields of Public Health importance.

The faculty members and 4th year MBBS students have published numerous articles in indexed journals. The department regularly celebrates National and international health related events and conduct seminars on various health related issues, in which renowned speakers from various fields have been invited to share their expertise with the students and faculty. The Department also has a state of art museum and a library. We have the most qualified faculty in the whole country. Our teaching methodology is problem oriented and student based. Students are evaluated at regular intervals and regular counseling is provided. Our endeavors have been rewarded with excellent results. The department collaborates with various public and private health institutions and field level organizations where students receive hands on training.

Basic Health Unit (BHU) Manawan is attached to the Department of Community Medicine through an MOU, in the spirit of public/private partnership, for the training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students.

Forensic Medicine

This course is introduced in third year. Forensic medicine includes medical ethics – principles legal system in Pakistan. Duties and responsibilities of doctors, Medical aspects of law in relation to poisons; their recognition, treatment and collection of viscera and their analytical methods. Factory Act-Workmen compensation, social security (industrial injuries).

Medico-legal aspects of death, crimes of violence-homicide, suicide, accident, firearm injuries, explosions, railway and vehicular injuries, medico-legal autopsy-exhumation. Identification problems, sexual assaults, medico-legal aspects of pregnancy, delivery abortions, impotency, application of Dyat and Hudood ordinance in case of Zina (adultery) and other offence of violence.

Medical negligence – Professional secrecy – Privileged Communication. Legal proceedings – Law of evidence – Responsibility in law (Criminal responsibility including testamentary capacity – contract law-writing will) consent in medical treatment – validity of printed consent forms, general procedure of inquiring into the matters needing medico-legal investigation.

Pathology is that branch of medicine which is concerned with the causes and the development of disease. Knowledge of Pathology forms the link between basic and all clinical sciences. Without an accurate diagnosis, the selection of a course of treatment for a particular disease may be limited. Knowing about pathology means analysis of different samples (blood, urine, tissue) of the patient, so that exact cause of illness can be identified. Moreover, research in the understanding of disease processes is important in the development of new treatments.

It provides a forum for the understanding of the pathological processes and evaluation of new and existing diagnostic applications of scientific advances and clinical pathologic correlations. Our focus is to conduct the diagnostic investigations of human diseases.


The objective is to train competent medical professionals/pathologists. The Department is striving to fulfill the following objectives:

The department of Pathology is actively involved in both undergraduate (MBBS and BDS) and postgraduate teaching programmes. The subject of pathology is taught as per guideline of PMC. The students study pathology in 2 years (3rd and 4th). 3rd year Pathology consists of General pathology, Microbiology, Parasitology. Basic principles of pathology and disease process are taught along with knowledge about common pathogens. 4th year pathology is organ/system based. Pathology of the diseases of all major systems are covered along with the protocol of laboratory diagnosis. Pathological aspects of the diseases of the blood cells and Blood transfusion pathology is also taught.

The department is proud to have very experienced and dedicated teaching faculty. Multiple teaching methodologies are used to deliver the course content e.g. interactive lecturing, small group discussions and team based learning. Special emphasis is given on Hands on practice of common basic laboratory tests and interpretation of lab reports.


The Department of Pathology consists of 4 fully functional, independent sections i.e Histopathology, Hematology, Microbiology and Chemical Pathology. All sections are fully equipped and are involved in all routine pathological investigations. The department is open (8:00 – 2:30), five days a week. The department receives specimens primarily from GTTH, the affiliated hospital of LMDC. GTTH is a 700-beded hospital with all major clinical specialties. The clinical pathology laboratory of GTTH is also affiliated with the department and is open 24hrs all year round. The clinical laboratory is responsible for all routine indoor, OPD, after hours and emergency pathology services. Histopathology and Hematology and Microbiology sections are college based where most of the tests are performed. Fine needle aspirations and bone marrow examinations are also carried out in the department.

Pathology Museum: It is one of the largest pathology museums in the whole of Punjab. The museum has more than 600 cataloged gross histopathology specimens from all systems and covering almost all common lesions for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The museum has been developed by a dedicated team and is supervised by Professor Dr. Shazia Ibnerasa who is associated with the department of pathology since its start.All the museum specimens have been digitallyphotographed and the specimen library can be accessed by the students on line.

Scope of department: The department of pharmacology at LMDC comprises of faculty, students and technical staff that works for providing quality pre-clinical and clinical education in pharmacology and therapeutics to the students of medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy and oral hygiene. The scope of pharmacology is rapidly expanding and provides the rational basis for the therapeutic use of the drug. At undergraduate level pharmacology is studied under two main inter related domains.

Pharmacokinetics : The study of absorption ,distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs

Pharmacodynamics: The effect off drug on body i.e. study of molecular, biochemical and physiological effects of drugs on cellular systems and their mechanism of action.

Oral Biology & Tooth Morphology

Scope of Department:

Oral Biology & Tooth Morphology includes the study of the development, structure, form and function of the oral cavity and its constituent parts with special emphasis on the gross and microscopic structure of teeth and their supporting structures

Objectives of Department:

It is a foundation course in dentistry which is taught during the first year. The course consists of four components including Oral Histology, Oral Anatomy, Oral Physiology and ToothMorphology.

Oral Embryology, Oral Histology and Oral Physiology provide understanding of development of the oral cavity followed by the microscopic study of teeth, their supporting structures and the bones, joints and glands of the oral cavity. The function and clinical relevance of each structure is concurrently discussed.

In Tooth Morphology and Occlusion Students learn to identify teeth & to study the gross structure of permanent and deciduous teeth and their function.

Community & Preventive Dentistry

Scope of the Department: Community & Preventive Dentistry Department encompasses the aspects of promoting health, prolonging life and preventing oral diseases in the population and their up to date knowledge in the students.

Objectives of the Department: Students are given the concepts of Oral Epidemiology, Oral Health Promotion, health economics, and Human behavior in the society as well as in the clinic, socio-anthropology and determinants of Oral health and disease.

For Students: The study of Planning and managing oral health programs, Oral health care systems and questionnaires and bio-statistics are introduced at appropriate stages. Special emphasis is given to trends of Oral health diseases at global and national levels and their prevention· All lectures delivered are evidence based and up-to-date and current with the new advancements in the subject. Students as groups and individuals are required to deliver multimedia presentations as a requirement of the subject and are fully assisted with the process as needed.

Community Dentistry Museum has been developed for facilitation of students and better understanding of the subject.

Typodonts are used initially to develop concepts and later Phantom-heads are used as patient simulation for understanding and practice of different clinical examinations taught in the course. This is carried out in the fully equipped Skills lab.

Annual Scientific Research poster competition and exam takes place in the second quarter of the academic year.

Annual Oral Health Day/week in which patients are educated and are given free tooth brushes and tooth pastes to improve their health. They are then followed over time and the results are published bi-annually.

The department hosts free checkups and treatments for two orphanages on a quarterly basis and are followed for follow up treatments.

Periodontology is an emerging specialty in the field of dentistry which deals with the diseases of the tooth supporting structures. A healthy and beautiful smile also involves healthy gums. Symptoms such as: uncovering tooth necks, hypersensitivity to temperature changes, crown lengthening, gaps between teeth, relocation of teeth, loosening of teeth or even their loss, unpleasant breath odor, bleeding, swelling, and redness of gums suggest a disease of gums and other tissues surrounding the teeth. It involves a wide variety of treatment methods, however, irrespective of the form of the disease and its advancement, the hygiene of the oral cavity is of utmost importance in the treatment process. The procedure in the case of diseases of periodontium depends on the damage already made in the oral cavity by the disease.

Services Offered: Number of procedures namely scaling, root planning, flap procedures, coverage of gingival recession, curettage, Dental implants.etc. The department is providing non-surgical and surgical periodontal treatment to the masses. For the advanced surgical procedures such as guided tissue regeneration (GTR) periodontal plastic surgery and implant surgeries, the department has established a fully equipped implant centre.

Scope of Department

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology represents the dental specialty that identifies  diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions and investigates the causes, processes and effects of these diseases, combine with the expertise in histopathological and clinical diagnosis  of the oral disease which may occur solely or may be associated with any systemic disease or syndrome

Objectives of Department:

Comprehensive understanding of Oral & Maxillofacial diseases

Knowledge and understanding of pathologic changes, clinical,  radiographic and microscopic, in order to arrive at a differential diagnosis and ultimately a final diagnosis.

Introduction of common laboratory methods  used for histopathological examination and to advance the practice of diagnostic oral pathology

Recognize the need for additional studies, such as biopsy, imaging studies or laboratory tests and be able to perform or order appropriate tests and interpret their results.

Understand and apply the scientific methodology

recognize the indications for additional studies, such as special stains, ultrastructural studies, types of biopsy and immunohistochemical studies

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery


Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) is that specialty of Dentistry that encompasses the art and science of diagnosis and surgical management of diseases, injuries and defects of the Oral and Maxillofacial region.


Undergraduate teaching:

Training in OMFS starts in 3rd year of BDS and continued through 4th year. Lectures / group discussions are held on weekly basis. Students complete a total of 16 weeks of clinical duty in the OMFS department, and accomplish their clinical requirements. The 4th year course is integrated with other specialties like Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Operative dentistry and Periodontics.

House Officers:

House officers have to complete two months rotation to Oral and maxillofacial surgery department, during which they gain competence in performing various minor surgical procedures. They are encouraged to actively participate in various CDE activities.

Post graduate training:

Oral and maxillofacial surgery department is a recognized training centre for FCPS residency. Residents complete a total of four years gaining experience and acquiring surgical expertise. They are also actively involved in weekly academic sessions including article discussions, CDE seminars and symposiums.

Continual dental education:

Conduct CDE activities including seminars and symposiums every week to upgrade promote continual dental education.

Operative Dentistry

Department of Operative Dentistry is the largest department of the dental college which consists of four clinics namely Restorative, Endodontics, Crown and Bridge and Paedodontics, a ceramics lab and a 22 unit skills lab for pre-clinical training. This is one of the most well equipped Operative clinics among all the public/private teaching hospitals of the country with 35 units and a consultant clinic.

The students and faculty is providing out patients services to 16000 patients and 11000 patients are treated in the clinics annually. Operative dentistry department is carrying out teaching and training of students of 2nd, 3rd and final year BDS, 1st and 2nd year Dental Hygienists. Operative Department/Faculty dually accredited by College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, and University of Health Sciences Lahore.

The department has been recently upgraded with the renovation of Paedodontics and Endodontics clinics through installation of brand new state of the art equipment and materials.

Crown and Bridge Laboratory has been provided with the Latest Zirconia based Composite Resin processing and curing unit which makes this department as the only one in a private or public teaching hospital equipped with this facility and gives our students the advantage of being better trained at the latest techniques then graduates of other institutions.

Department faculty has carried out series of workshops on Restorative procedures in collaboration with the Center of Continuing Dental Education (ISLAMABAD) catering to both the college graduates as well as the general practitioners and graduates from other institutions, thus helping students earn valuable credit hours which help them in enrolment into training programs in foreign countries as well as increasing their career prospects internationally.

Scope of the Department:

Operative Dentistry is the art and science of diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of defects of teeth that do not require full coverage restorations for corrections. Such treatment should result in the restoration of proper tooth form, function and esthetics while maintaining the physiological integrity of the teeth in harmonious relationships with the adjacent hard and soft tissues, all of which should enhance the general health and welfare of the patient.

The department is designed to provide undergraduate and postgraduate students with advanced training in all facets of operative Dentistry. The department is responsible for the majority of academic, Pre-clinical and clinical courses leading to the Bachelor of dental surgery.

In pre-clinical instructions, students develop their manual dexterity on visual reality station that simulates a dental environment.

The Department of Restorative Dentistry is to give foundation knowledge of operative instrumentation, dental terminology, and tooth anatomy, principals of cavity preparation and basics of tooth restoration.

The development and practice of these skills using hand piece and rotary instruments begins at orientation and continues throughout the academic year.


Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that is concerned with the biology, physiology, pathology and treatment of the dental pulp and peri-radicular tissues.

The endodontic clinic trains students to become competent in basic endodontic procedure on vital and non-vital teeth. This includes instructions in diagnosis, treatment planning, preservation of vital teeth and treatment/obturation. This instruction is expanded and reinforced in 4th year clinics.

Pediatric Dentistry:

This specialty is concerned with dentistry for children and the disabled. It includes training students to restoring and maintains the primary, mixed and young permanent dentition.

Faculty and students are emphasized to ensure proper behavioral management of the children in case of both objective and subjective fear. Emergency Treatment in case of acute pain and treatment of the dental caries and pulpal diseases i.e. pulpits and trauma are provided on immediate basis.

Molecular Pharmacology (Drug resistance & characterization of drug resistant genes & antibiotic reversal, anti-viral activity, Drug – Receptor Interaction & Gene expression, Characterization of drug resistant Proteins & Nucleic Acids.

Biochemical Techniques for Molecular Pharmacology:

Separation, Purification and Characterization of drug resistant Proteins, Nucleic Acids and Phospholipids,
Sequencing and Synthesis of Nucleic Acids and Peptides (biotechnologically advanced drugs)
Study of Drugs Metabolism and relevant enzyme.

Pharmacokinetic research: In vivo research is often combined with experimental studies in-vitro and in silico (computational medicine – Direct use of computer simulation in the treatment or prevention of a disease)understanding the molecular mechanisms & also in designing genotyping or phenotyping tests to observe intra- and inter individual differences in pharmacokinetics & Pharmacodynamics, forecast drug response & to differentiate between genetic and non-genetic modifiers of the outcome of drug treatment.
Neuropharmacology  (which includes, Principles used in experimental neuropharmacology, Central & Peripheral Neurotransmission, Pain Models & Neurotoxicity) – to study effect of various analgesics on pain sensitivity, to study effect of drugs on spontaneous motor activity and evaluating their nature as CNS stimulants or depressants, Local anesthetic effect, Induction & recovery time for various volatile general anesthetics, to study anti-parkinsonian activity e.g. using Phenothiazine induced catatonia, to evaluate antiepileptic activity of a drug e.g. using chemical induced convulsion methods, to study effect of various tranquillizers and sedatives on motor coordination e.g. using Rota rod test in rodents, to study effect of drugs on depression e.g. using forced swim test,  to study pharmacology of abused drugs e.g. study of Induction of Physical Dependence with opioids).

Pharmacy Practice

Pharmacy practice is discipline of pharmacy which involves developing the professional role of pharmacist. It links the health sciences with the chemical sciences and is charged with ensuring the save use of medication. The role of pharmacy profession and pharmacist in uplifting health care system has been well established and acknowledged all over the world. The pharmacy profession is well known as a “LIFE SAVING PROFESSION”. The major emphasis of the World Health Organization (WHO) in developing countries to provide prompt and economical means for caring human health. This noble task cannot achieve without Pharmacists because they are only ones who know about drug and related substance.


The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing medications, and it also includes more modern services related to patient care, including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information.

To train our upcoming professionals in evidence-based research involving Clinical drug evaluation: Clinical Trials, Randomized Controlled Trial – (RCT) and its extension to meta-analysis or systematic reviews of several RCTs for documenting the efficacy of drugs; Adverse Drug Reaction research involving methodologies for collecting: Individual case reports of clinical suspicions of adverse drug reactions. Data mining: in adverse drug reaction research —– the search for structures and patterns in large adverse drug reaction databases, (manual inspection no longer being possible). Data mining involves the development, testing and implementation of computer methods, routine algorithms and tools for finding such associations and patterns of associations between drug intake and adverse events. Therapeutic Drug Monitoring: measurement of drug concentrations in blood or plasma – Laboratory Methods to perform TDM formulate a clinically relevant problem, design the study that will help to bring further understanding to this problem.
